During my travels I encounter the most impressive
and natural works of art. On a trip to Barbados, in
the historic village of Speightstown, stood before me a wall
that was covered in the richest of texture and patina.
Layers upon layers of organic matter had rendered its original
state, creating an exquisite canvas.
It occurred to me that there was a parallel between
this natural process and that of the unique character of the
individual. Similar to the journey of life, it is exposure
to experience and social influence, combined with one's predisposed
nature, that shapes our ultimate being, rendering the individual
with its very own unique and exquisite texture. Much like
the infant child the wall commenced life with a clean slate,
tabula rasa, blank until impressions are recorded
upon it by experience. It is this process that informs these
paintings.
